Amritsar (also called Ambarsar) historically also known as RÄmdÄspur is a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, not far from the border with Pakistan. Lahore, in Pakistan, is 50 km to the west.
At the center of its walled old town is the Gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), considered the holiest Gurdwara, the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. More than 100,000 visitors on weekdays visit this Sikh shrine which is the most popular destination for non-resident Indians.The Akal Takht is the highest seat of earthly authority of the Khalsa and the committee is responsible for the upkeep of Gurdwaras.
The city is known for its rich cuisine and culture, and is famous for carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 under British Rule is an important part of the Indian History.
Amritsar has been chosen as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.

By Air: Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, has more than 160 domestic and international flights during the week with daily connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, and Srinagar etc. in India and international flights to London(Heathrow), Birmingham, Melbourne and Sydney via Delhi. Also it has direct flights to Doha, Ashgabat, Kualalumpur, Tashkent and Dubai.
By Rail: Amritsar is well connected by rail to almost all major cities in India. Special train Samjhauta Express runs west to Wagah (Attari Border), before continuing on to Pakistan.
By Road: The city lies on the main Grand Trunk Road built by Sher Shah Suri, which runs through the whole of the northern half of the Indian subcontinent, connecting Peshawar, Pakistan to Sonargaon, Bangladesh.
