Bikaner Back
Founded in 1488 by Rajput prince Rao Bikaji.Civilization flourished here even before the Harappa period according to Archeological surveys and excavations, and has played a notable role in the history of the country.
Places of interest:
Junagarh:Bikaner Fort was built in 1593 by Raja Rai Singh, who also a general in the army of Emperor Akbar. Made from red sandstone Junagarh consists of several palaces and apartments,delicate stone screens, kiosks, pavilions, arched entrances to buildings with windows overlooking the city.Fort Museum: Ganga Mahalcontains a fine collection of antique Rajput weaponry.
Anup Mahal, Chandra Mahal and Phool Mahal are richly decorated with paintings.
Badal Mahal has painting of clouds on its walls depicting scarcity of rain.
Lallgarh Palace: built by Maharaja Ganga Singh has beautiful latticework and filigree work, sprawling lawns and dancing peacocks.Part of the palace has been converted into a luxury hotel and a museum known as Shri Sadul Museum. Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum:houses Local Arts & Crafts, Sculpture, Terracotta and Bronzes, Armoury, Miniature Paintings, Folk Arts.
Gaga Public Park with a Zoo, Ratan Bihari Temple Park, Tessitory Park are worth a visit.
EXCURSIONS:
Bhandeshwar & Sandeshwar Temples, The old Jain havelies, Lakshminathji, Ratan Bihariji, and Nagnechiji temple, Bhaironji Temples at Kodamdesar(40 kms).
Camel Research Farm (8 km):Spread over 2000 acres it is Open 15.00 to 17.00 hrs (closed on Sundays and Government holidays). Photography prohibited.
Devi Kund (8 km): A royal crematorium with Maharaja Suruj Singh`s Chhatri in white marble with spectacular paintings on the ceiling.
Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary (32 km): on the Jaisalmer road are famopus for spotting nilgai, chinkara, black bucks, wild boar and blocks of imperial sand grouse. The Gajner Palace, is converted into a hotel.
Shiv Bari Temple (6 km): has beautiful paintings and a bronze Nandi.
Deshnok:30 km on Jodhpur Road is Karni Mata Temple of Rats where rats are considered to be incarnations of storytellers and the holy rodents are known as Kabas, and considered highly auspicious to have one run across your feet.
Kolayat:Kapil Muni is believed to have done tapasya (meditation) here and Kapil Muni Fair held on Kartik Poornima is the largest fair of Bikaner district. There is a lake with 52 ghats, temple dedicated to Kapil Muni with marble statue of the sage.
