Amarkantak Back
Aptly called Tirthraj or "king of pilgrimages", Amarkantak plateau in the Maikal hills marks the origin of the river rivers Narmada which flows Westwards, Sone which flows towards the East and Johila River. Blessed by Lord Shiva with unique purifying powers, the mere sight of Narmada is enough.
Situated at the meeting point of the Vindhya and the Satpura mountain ranges at an altitude of 1048 meters (3438 ft) Amarkantak is a great pilgrim center for the Hindus, surrounded by a rich variety of flora with medicinal properties, Holy ponds, beautiful waterfalls attracting nature lovers as well. Kabir Chabutra is a place where Spiritual Poet Kabir is said to have meditated.
South of Narmadakund, the ancient temples of Kalachuri built by Kalachuri Maharaja Karnadeva (1041–1073 AD)., Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was established here in 2007, to promote research in various aspects of tribal communities and provide higher education to them.
EXCURSIONS:At Kapildhara where sage Kapil spend 12 years meditating here, too, Narmada pours down in a gushing waterfall and depressions in the water-worn rocks are said to be the footprints of that Kapil Muni. About a kilometer away are Dugdh Dhara Falls..
Narmada Udgam is a temple is the holiest spot in Amarkantak. Sonmuda is the prime source of the river Sone. Brighu Kamandal where the water pitcher which is always full of water, Dhuni Pani is a hot spring in a dense forest. Dudhdhara water falls is 50 ft. milk–white cascade of water. Mai Ki Bagiya is a lovely garden with a temple. Visitors can attend Kund ki Arti ( from 7 to 8 pm) and the Narmada Arti (8 to 9 pm).

The nearest rail head : Pendra Road (42 km via Keonchi & only 28 km via Jwaleshwar) on the Katni - Bilaspur section of the South-Eastern Railway.
By Road:Amarkantak is connected by regular bus service with Shahdol, Umaria, Jabalpur, Rewa, Bilaspur, Anuppur and Pendra Road.
