On Auranagabd Chalisgaon road are the famous Group of 13 Pithalkora Caves. These are the oldest Caves in India dating back to the 2nd century B.C. There are beautiful paintings and intricate carvings in Buddha Caves. The remains at Pitalkhora include, miniature caitya windows, animal motifs, the elephants, guardians, and yaksa figures. The elaborate carving above doors, in cells, and around rooms make carvings at Pitalkhora more noteworthy than at Ajanta. In contrast to the Hinayana excavations at Ajanta, devoid of carvings, are these ornate sculptures of Pitalkhora from the Mahayana period.
The paintings with their beauty, expressions, rich color schemes, fine shading, balanced composition delight the visitors.
At the foot of the hill is Patan the place of Sage Bhaskaracharya- the Great Indian Mathematician, Rich carvings are also found in the Shiva Temple here. In Hanuman Temple at Kannad we can see the Idol of Lord Vishnu kicking the head of Rahu in the sky.
