Known as  "Udumbravati", in ancient times, Amravati was abondaned by natives due to  famine  in 14th century, and returned back after several years.
Chhatrapati Shahoo Maharaj presented Amravati and Badnera to Shri Ranoji Bhosle, in 1722.
Britishers conquered Gavilgad fort  on 15th Dec` 1803 and  the Warhad was presented to Nijam.In 1956, Amravati district became part of Bombay State.

Amaravati is the place of Great personalities like, Shri Sant Gadge Baba, Shree Sant Gulabrao Maharaj, Rashtrasant  Tukdoji Maharajj and is the home town of First Finance Minister of independent India Mr. C.D.Deshmukh and Smt. Pratibhatai Patil -The first woman President of India. Shri Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal is a world famous sports institute of Amravati.

The statue of King Shri Shivaji Maharaj is placed on the top of the  Maltekdi hill. Chhatri Talao & Wadali Talao are lakes in the eastern part of the city.

Shri Ambadevi Temple  situated  at  Gandhi Square is visited by people from all over India.
Nearby is Shri Ekvira Devi Temple built around the year 1660 by the great son of Amravati Paramhans Shri Janardan Swami. -Rukmini, the daughter of King Bhishmak of Vidarbha, visited the temple of Goddess Ekvira a day before her marriage to Shishupal and Krishna kidnaped Rukmini here and married her.

Bhakti Dham Temple:on Amravati Badnera road, houses beautiful idols of Lord Krishna, Radha and, Shri Sant Bappa.
Satidham Temple situated  at Rallies Plot houses idols of Lord Krishna-Radha, Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva and Rani Satiji and fair  arranged on the occasion of Janmashthami,  is attended by large number of devotees.
