Known as "Udumbravati", in ancient times, Amravati was abondaned by natives due to famine in 14th century, and returned back after several years.

Nearby is Shri Ekvira Devi Temple built around the year 1660 by the great son of Amravati Paramhans Shri Janardan Swami. -Rukmini, the daughter of King Bhishmak of Vidarbha, visited the temple of Goddess Ekvira a day before her marriage to Shishupal and Krishna kidnaped Rukmini here and married her.
