Lonar Back
Created by the impact of a comet or meteoroid approximately 6,000 years ago, The Lonar crater is about 2 km in diameter, 10 kms in circumference with 170 meters depth is filled by salt water from under currents. Salts are accumulated due to vaporization. However the normal potable water is found in the surrounding area. Perennial stream of water flows from "Gomukh" alongside the rim of the crater. It is amongst the world`s five largest craters & the third largest salt water lake. As mentioned in Aaina-e-Akbari., Lonar housed a salt factory during the era of Mughal Emperor Akbar.
First discovered in 1823 by C J E Alexander, Lonar also finds mention in Skanda Purana, Padma Purana. The Daitya-sudan temple is famous for it"s beautiful carvings of Lord Vishnu, Varha-Ganesh, Brahma-Bhairav, Parshuram, Ram, Kaliya Mardan and also some erotic sculptures.
Flocks of peafowl`s inside the crater marks it"s potential as a bird sanctuary. We can spot monitor lizards, snakes, , mongoose, langoors, fox and deers here.
