Spread over the protected area of 10000 hectares, the core area of the Sanctuary is about 1765 hectares, along the Nandur Madhameshwar dam at the confluence of Godavari and Kadwa. More than 220 species of birds, 400 species of flora, 24 species of aquatic life and several smaller mammals is the paradise for bird watchers with the large variety of water birds. International Union of Conservation of Nature has declared this sanctuary as one of the important water fowl habitats in the region.
