Bheemashankar is the place where Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasur and due to his sweat river Bhima was originated here. Hence it was known as Bheemashankar. Housing one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, out of which 5 Jyotirlingas in Maharashtra,
this beautiful Shiva temple was built by Nana Phadnis and some part of it was completed by his widow after his death. In this temple built with black stones, their is a huge bell and statue of Nandi in the corridor and lake near the temple has source in nearby flowing river.
Every year thousands of devotees visit this temple. Near by are the hills of Manmad, where the carvings of Bhootling, Amba-Ambika are worth a visit.
Though Bhimashankar has religious importance, it is place worth visiting for all nature lovers. Its beauty enhances in Monsoon and Winter. Gupt Bhimashankar, Origin of river Bhima,Sakshi Vinayak, Hanuman Lake, Wyaghrapaad, Vandhya Teertha- Childless couples take a bath in this lake and hope to be blessed with a child. Bhimashankar is conservered forest area and wildlife sanctuary spread over 130.78 sq. kms. area, where a variety of animals, birds, flowers, plants and is famous for viewing the Flying Squirrel (Shekaru).
