Situated at the confluence of Mula and Mutha rivers(tributaries of the Bhima), Pune lies 560 m (1837 ft) above the sea level and considered the cultural capital of Maharashtra. With several reputed colleges and educational institutions it is aptly called the Oxford of the East (or `Oxford of India`). The automobile sector bestows its position as the `Detroit of India`. Pune is a hub of major software and IT companies.
Shaniwar Waada facing north was built by the successors the Peshwas in 1736. Most of the palace interiors were destroyed by massive fire in 1827 however the brass studded gates and lotus pools have withstood the ravages of time. `Light & Sound Show` in three languages (Marathi, Hindi and English) every evening brings alive the history of the Maratha empire and Shaniwar wada.
The Kasba Ganapati temple known as the deity of the city, was built by Jijabai (Shivaji`s mother) near Lal Mahal. The Trishundya Ganapati temple built in 1726 is famous for it`s with three trunks and is sitting on a Peacock. Saras Baug is famous for Ganesh Temple built by Peshwa Bajirao II in the middle of the garden which was a lake in the Peshwa Era. Parvati Ganesh temple has a small temple of Ganesh built by the Peshwas in 1749 on the hillock with 108 stairs commanding a beautiful view of the Pune city.A small museum on the top displaying the artifacts of the Peshwa clan, old manuscripts, coins etc. A small tunnel Inside the temple has three outlets, one of which leading to the Chatuhshrungi temple, nearly 7 - 8 km away.
On Senapati Bapat Road, situated ninety feet high on the slopes of a hill, is the famous temple of Goddess Chatuhshrungi the reigning deity of Pune which was also worshipped by Chhatrapati Shivaji. Pune University on Ganeshkhind built in Italian-Gothic style is one of the oldest universities of India. On Sambhaji Road lies the 8th century rock cut temple of Pataleshwar dedicated to Shiva and a Nandi bull, which has been carved out of a single boulder and includes massive pillars.
Heart of the city on Bajirao Road visit Raj Dinakar Kelkar Museum housed in a Rajasthani style building and holds a collection of the most fascinating Indian articrafts in 36 sections "Mastani Mahal" is a masterpiece amongst it. Estabished in 1890 Mahatma Phule Museum on the Junction of Apte Road and Ghole Road displays various industrial products, agricultural and handicraft articles in this museum.Vishram Bagh Waada The remains of this majestic palace stand in the heart of the old city. It was built during the 18th century by a descendant of Shivaji the Peshwa. It is well known for its elaborate wooden facade.
Katraj Snake Park is on Satara road. NDA (National Defence Acadamy that trains officers, cadets of all the three branches of the Defense Services for Commission in the Army, Navy and Air-Force, is situated at Khadakvasla, 17 kms From Pune. Pashan Lake is situated 12 kms off the road to N.D.A. is the favourite haunt of a number of migratory and residential birds.

Bund Garden close to the Camp area on the right bank of the Mula-Mutha this garden is famous for the evening boat rides, horse rides and Bhel/Pani-Puri.Located off Koregaon Road east of Pune City Stn is Tribal Museum houses artifacts from the Sahyadri and Gondhwa regions. Aga Khan Palace on Pune Nagar Road is a historical landmark where the British interned Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi here in 942 .

Forts: Pune is surrounded by numerous forts. Sinhagad (25 Kms), formerly known as Kondhana was named after Shivaji�s Gen. Tanaji Malusare who scaled this sheer precipice with help of giant lizardsand was killed in the battle which brought this impregnable fort back to `Swarajya`. One can climbe the fort on foot or opt for direct access by road.
Nil Kantheshwar 45 km near Panshet dam.is famous for large amount of statues showing different events of mythology and beautiful sun set view.
Rajgad (42 kms) from Pune, is called the King of all forts 1400 mts above sea level where Shivaji Maharaj spent nearly 30 years of his life here.Twin forts of Lohagad & Visapur (1350 m) separated by a ridge was the stronghold Shivaji`s is near Malavli (10 km from Pune). The Bhaja caves, are 4 kilometer walk from Lohagad.
Torna near Velha, off Satara Road, is one of the highest forts in Maharashtra, and was Shivaji`s first major conquest.
Jejuri (48 kms) is known for the Khandoba deity and the annual fair held here is attended by large number of devotees. Ashtavinayaka (eight Ganesh temples) Five of these famous religious places are in and around Pune namely Sri Moreshwar, Sri Chintamani, Sri Mahaganapati, Sri Wighnahar and Sri Girijatmak.
