Previously called Kondhana,  it was renamed Sinhagad after Tanaji, a general for Shivaji, who lost his life while recapturing this strategically important fort in March of 1670.The fortification which is now in ruins, also houses a memorial to Tanaji as well as the tomb of Rajaram, Shivaji`s younger son, who also died here.

Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak, , built a bungalow atop the fort and Gandhiji is said to have asked for water from it whenever he was imprisoned in the nearby town of Pune. It is popular for a day long picnic and site seeing
